Immediate effect of vibration on rectus abdominis activity and abdomen skin temperature
The goal of Brazilian researchers at the Federal University of Paraíba was to compare the acute effect of isometric abdominal exercise performed with or without vibration on electromyographic (EMG) activity and skin temperature around the abdomen in physically active people.
- The vibrations given during isometric abdominal exercises proved to be safe
- and did not affect skin temperature or abdominal muscle activation.
Prepared on the basis of:
The immediate effect of whole-body vibration on rectus abdominis muscle activity and cutaneous temperature: A randomized controlled trial. Gonçalves AF, Matias FL, Parizotto NA et al. J Bodyw Mov Ther. 2021 Jan;25:46-52.
Study population
30 healthy volunteers participated in the study.
Test procedure
The procedure of the presented clinical trial was randomized, controlled and cross-over.
The subjects were randomly assigned to 2 groups of 15 people. Both groups performed the same abdominal exercises on a vibration platform in 2 one-week exercise sessions with one week off in between. In the first week, the vibration platform generated vibrations (with a frequency of 30 Hz) only in the first group, while in the second group it was inactive. In the second week of exercises, the first group performed the exercises without vibration, while the second group – with vibration.
Rectus abdominis muscle (RAM) EMG data and abdominal skin temperature were analyzed.
Results
There were no differences in RAM activation or abdominal temperature levels between the vibration-free and vibration-applied abdominal exercise protocols (p> 0.05), with the abdominal temperature increased (p = 0.001) after both vibration and vibration-free exercise.
Comment
Vibration during isometric abdominal exercises was found to be safe and did not affect skin temperature or muscle activation.
